How I came to write 'A Resilient Life'

I remember the day I actually decided to write this book. I was on the phone with one of my best friends and was telling her about a class I wanted to teach. This class would be like the Arthritis Foundations’ Self-Help class but would offer much more. I called it a Resilient Living Class for people with rheumatoid arthritis. At the time I was a couple years into the worst flare-up of my life, and anyone with arthritis knows how easily this can break your spirit. I had spent those years doing endless research, trying endless treatments, both medical and alternative, and knew I had a lot of information that could help other people in similar circumstances. As I was describing to Kiki my ideas she said, “You should write a book.” What Kiki didn’t know was that she was the fourth person that month to say this. So I turned my head up to the sky and declared, “Okay, I’ll Do It!”

Writing taught me so much about being resilient...

Little did I know what was in store for me. Years of writing but also learning. Just when I thought I had it all figured out I’d realize something else that would bring me into a new direction and towards better health. If writing this book has taught me anything it’s that you can peel the layers of self understanding forever. That is one of the beauties of this miracle we call life.

What I know for sure...

The one thing, as Oprah says, "I know for sure", is that I can’t tell anyone what to do to heal their body. The only person who knows what direction to take is you. What I can do is to light the way, and pave the trail so you aren’t scrambling in the dark.

You can heal...

I can also tell you, with deep understanding and wholehearted truth, that you can heal. You do heal. Every day, every minute, every hour, your body is healing itself. And whether the rheumatoid arthritis is a gorilla on your back, a monkey, or a T-Rex right now, one day it will get better. Along the way you have endless choice in how you handle the challenges that will inevitably come. You are in control of your words, actions, behaviors, even when in pain you have the choice to cry or to laugh.

As it turns out, this book was written just as much for me as for others. We all need to be reminded of how resilient we are and this book has helped me to tap into the inner resilience that was there in me all along. It can do the same for you.

"When I take the time to ponder the true meaning of health I realize that, surprisingly, my disease has made me healthier. With each challenge the disease has created for me, the opportunity has been there to transmute this challenge into a lesson on how to be a better person. The arthritis has made me wise. And I use this wisdom to create a healthy life." --Kat Elton
